People become obese or overweight when they consume more calories than they can burn. There is no fixed standard diet suited for everybody. Each individual is different and has a different metabolism rate. Besides over eating is not the only reason for gaining weight, other factors like lack of physical activity, eating habits genes, age, psychology and other factors can also cause obesity.
Lack of Physical Activity
Thanks to the advancements made by the human race life is an ease and there isn’t a need to carry out physical activity. At work everything is done by sitting on a chair and for entertainment people prefer sitting in front of the television. As a result of all this people are only eating food and piling on fat. There is very little activity that helps in burning the calories.
Eating Habits
Many people do not think about their calorie intake when they are eating food. They just let their taste buds guide them. Majority of the people don’t realize the harm junk and high fat food cause. They don’t miss out on an opportunity to have food. Due to this they end up storing a lot of excess fat in their body.
Genes
Obesity is also caused due to the genes that a person inherits from his parents. In these cases there is very little that can be done. But some times obesity runs in the family because the children follow similar eating habits as the parents. Due to this they also end up becoming fat.
Age
As people grow older they seem to gain weight. The reason for this is the body’s metabolism rate goes down with age and there isn’t the need to eat as much as the younger days. Many people ignore the fact that their metabolism rate has gone down and due to this eat more than what can be processed.
Psychology
Psychological factors like stress, anger and depression also cause a person to become obese. During such situations people often find solace in food and consume extremely high quantities. There have been many cases when people have fallen prey to obesity due to behavioral and psychological problems.
Health Conditions and Medications
Some illnesses can also cause a person to gain weight. These health problems include certain neurological problems, hypothyroidism, depression, and Cushing's syndrome. Even medications prescribed to cure certain problems can make a person overweight. These medications bring down the metabolism rate and increase appetite. In some cases side effects of drugs can cause the problem of becoming overweight.
Sex
Men have a higher resting metabolism rate due to this they are need to eat more than women in order to maintain their weight. Another factor due to which women gain more weight than men is that during the post-menopausal phase the metabolism rate goes down. Due to this women gain weight after menopause.
